M&W on an adventure….

The time is here! The “Europe to no good” trip will commence very soon. It snuck up on us so fast. On Sunday we leave on a big adventure for a photography workshop that we (Weston and The Boudoir Divas) are hosting in Paris, and then a road trip through Northern France, train to Belgium, and a ferry to London! We plan to journal as we go on this blog and our Diva’s blog, if internet is accessible.

We have been working around the clock to get our “To-Do’s” under wraps. After all this is our big vaca before wedding season goes into overdrive so we wanted to make sure we left without any serious anxiety about things being “undone.” If anyone has any traveling tips they are much appreciated. We are pretty familiar with France and London but still, I am sure there are plenty of you out there who know way more than us.

Crystal, our fantabulous studio manager, will be with us the first leg of the journey in Paris, but Amanda and Deena will be keeping up shop back at home so don’t hesitate to contact us. We will be doing our best to check email, but no promises, since you just never know what a trip abraod entails.

Here a a couple of images from our last trip:

Megan & Rodrigo :: Downtown with escalators, bridges, and parking meters?

Megan & Rodrigo only had one request for the shoot…which was to get a shot of them on an escalator. Why you might ask? Because they actually first met after passing by each other on none other than…an escalator! We loved the idea, so once it was dark enough we entered the Omni Hotel and started planning out how to pull off some of the shots. Shooting your clients on an escalator is actually pretty involved when you’re trying to time both of them on individual escalator tracks. Then you have to figure out the positioning of your light source, and then still try to pull off a very shallow depth of field with a correctly focused area of the frame.

The shot included in the post has Megan & Rodrigo on a single track but I actually liked this simpler shot the best because of how their reflection appeared on both sides of them; creating a mirrored effect. We used a video light for the escalator shot as well as the shots on the bridge. Most of the other shots were captured with available light at 1600-3200 ISO. I love the grit that the extra noise creates from those ISO ranges when processing in B&W tones. Some of my favorite shots included the shot that has Megan & Rodrigo mimicking the image of the man and woman behind them and then the B&W shot that was backlit on the bridge (you two look so sick in this shot, love the attitude of your posture/stance).

Whenever we came across random things like chairs or parking meters or whatever, we just gave things a try. Not everything works out but it really helps to stumble across something you maybe haven’t shot yet. Rodrigo was cracking us up with some of the faces he was making; I think he had a good time and that always makes us happy since most guys dread taking photos ;p. Marissa actually met Megan at Fit 2 Wed; a boot camp style program that promotes a healthy transition for your body before your big wedding day by means of exercise and nutrition. Oh and great clothing choices you two…Megan your blue shirt was a seriously cool contrast to the look of the downtown backdrops.

Val & Rob :: Pacific Beach Engagement

Val & Rob cracked us up from the start. They had a fun dynamic and made Marissa and I feel more normal for having all sorts of cute inside jokes and names for each other. They did an awesome job during the shoot too; I know that water was freezing so thanks for being so game!

We used natural/available light for for the entire shoot and spent most of our time underneath the pier due to the sun being brighter than expected at the time. It worked out well since the light coming in from the side of the pier was very directional; like a huge softbox. The textures on the supports combined with the vanishing point of the pier into the ocean itself made for some sweet shots. I’m still finding that the 5D has a tough time autofocusing in bright, back-lit scenes. Especially with our wide aperture lenses. Hopefully our new 5D Mark II will improve on the auto-focus as claimed by Canon. We’ll be using at a wedding this weekend for the first time; fingers crossed!

Here’s a little clip with some video footage the engagement shoot:

The story of the INVISIBLE CHILDREN :: Proof that a few can change the world.

INVISIBLE CHILDREN - THE MOVIE COVER

I wanted to write this post because I truly believe that it’s a testament to the fact that although our world is faced with enormous issues, our involvement on even the smallest level can have an everlasting impact. And to those who wait on others to act, I say reconsider. If anything please spread the word by sharing the info on your facebook/myspace page by a simple click on the “spread the word” links in this post after reading.

Marissa and I had the opportunity to be exposed to the life-changing documentary called “Invisible Children” a few years ago through our church, The Flood. I say life-changing because after watching the documentary we literally felt stirred inside to act, to get involved immediately. Documented by three young Americans, the film exposed an area of the world where over 1.8 million Ugandan children would commute every night to avoid abduction by a rebel force called the LRA who forced children to become brutal soldiers. The realities brought to the surface in the documentary touched that part inside of you that could not ignore; the injustice felt by those who cannot help themselves; innocent children. After being abducted, the 5-12 year old children were brainwashed and desensitized by violent indoctrination, using the fear of being killed themselves to follow through with their violent agenda; which regularly involved brutal murders with machetes and AK-47’s.

That was then…

UGANDA TODAY
“Since Invisible Children: Rough Cut was filmed in 2003, night commuting has ended for the children of northern Uganda. In recent years peace was seemingly within reach, largely due to the Juba Peace Talks. From June 2006 to March 2008 in Juba, Sudan, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and the Government of Uganda (GoU) engaged in a series of peace talks in order to end the conflict. These peace talks, supported by special envoys from the United States and other nations, allowed for the longest period of peace in northern Uganda’s 23-year war.

The Juba Peace Talks developed with hope for a lasting resolution, and concluded in March of 2008 with the Final Peace Agreement (FPA) ready for the signature of Joseph Kony and President Museveni. However, in April of 2008, Kony twice failed to appear and sign the FPA and officially ended the Juba talks mediated by the Southern Sudanese government. Joseph Kony’s stated reasons for not signing the FPA were a vague understanding of the treaty’s systems regarding post-conflict justice and an apprehension toward ICC warrants for him and four other LRA leaders. Since the collapse of the peace talks, the LRA has been active in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Central African Republic (CAR) and southern Sudan, drawing widespread disapproval from the international community and igniting a new urgency to end what has become a complex regional conflict.

In the last two years, an estimated 900,000 of the 1.8 million displaced have returned to their homes. But that leaves one million people currently living in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. While the majority desires to return home, the issues surrounding their return are complex. Some have been displaced for more than a decade, and their former way of life is all but gone. Access to clean water, economic opportunities, health centers, and education are a pressing concern for all, and even more so for the many who contemplate returning to resource-barren villages.” -InvisibleChildren.com

SO…

Although there are still great needs in the region, the film that these 3 young guys risked their lives for has had a huge impact and is incredibly worthy of mention (understatement). Since the film, the Invisible Children organization has really grown and is now involved in continuing their efforts to save the many more existing child soldiers still out there. Invisible Children is a non-profit who also accepts monthly pledges towards their efforts. Please check out the links below to get informed/involved…

Any given Sunday

I’ll tell you why WB n’ I are so lucky. Not only do we have incredible families, a great staff/friends at work that have become like family as well, but our friends just rock. These friends pictured are more like bro n sis to us really. We bicker, we give each other a hard time, we get annoyed at each others quirks, but ultimately we love to be in each other’s company. Any given Sunday you will find this quartet together on some new adventure (yes Kimee moved away but I find that she is visitng SD quite a bit which thrills me). This is also what we will be calling our “Europe To No Good” group. (Yes we name each one of our adventures for reference with each other, after much debate that is what we decided on for our Europe travels in April.

We all recently took a very last minute camping trip to San Clemente. After working harder in the past month than I ever knew was physically possible we decided that we needed to get away from our laptops, phone and technology as we know it. Alas we came to find out that most campgrounds are now outfitted with wi-fi, which I think is really sad, but we were strong.

Here they are, sans me, the photographer. On the left is Bri09 (that’s pronounced Bri-o-nine, not be confused with his earlier model, Bri08). K-dog (because she still hasn’t made it clear to us if she prefers, Kimee, Kim or Kimberlee) and Dub or WB. I am just plain old Riss. Mainly because I am usually the one giving the nicknames for the most part.

What an evening. I can just smell the cold, clean air by looking at this photo. Ah.

Prepare yourselves for a lot more personal photos come April. We will be doing our best to chronicle our whole trip with photos and want to blog as much as possible while we are there.

Observing a “Spero Lumina” Rehearsal :: Weston’s Band

Last week I snuck in to Weston’s band room to hear these incredible artists write/re-work a song. Wow. Just wow. I have such respect for these guys. Most of the members of the band have played together in some fashion for almost 15 years. Just crazy. This band in particular, although its name has changed, has been together for ten years. As a photographer I consider myself an artist, but I can’t help but feel like these guys are on a whole different level. Watching them brainstorm, listen to each others ideas, feed off each other and then ultimately create something beautiful out of thin air. Unreal. What’s funny is that I don’t even think these guys realize how in tune with each other they really are. Few words were spoken during this whole process and yet I saw their masterpiece really evolve.

What I love even more about Spero Lumina is that they are in it for the music. Not for themselves. They aren’t the band you will hear talking about “how can we get signed, we need to go on a tour, we should be famous.” Although I am sure they wouldn’t reject any of that if it were given to them, all they ever really seem to discuss is honing in on their craft, creating something beautiful.

Thanks for the wonderful gift of music you guys have given your faithful fans over the years. - Marissa

Gotta love a pregnant couple. Gorgeous.

They say that a woman glows when she is expecting, but based on these photos I think it is safe to say that both the hubby and the wife glow. What a wonderful couple.
Yesterday, I was lucky enough to meet Diana and Rich. This super cool couple is expecting and booked a maternity session with us, getting the bigger maternity package, with multiple looks which you will see in the video.

I just love pregnancy photography because I know that these photos will help this gorgeous mother always remember this most precious time in her life. Thanks for letting us video you guys, it was wonderful getting to know you two. - Marissa

PS. I am in love with this Rivers Cuomo song. It is the perfect mix between cheezy/romance and converse tennis shoes. Which, in a nutshell, may explain my personality exactly :)

Time Machine : Weston’s childhood photos

Weston’s mom emailed us some photos that she scanned in today. Boy, oh boy, did this make me laugh. Someone is obviously in trouble here in the first one. The pretty lady in the first photo is Weston’s mama, lovely designer and graphic artist. Thank you Jeri for all your love, help and encouragement. And, above all, thank you for raising such a lovely boy. Congrats on being a grandma! (no everyone, not me, WB’s sis is prego, the one in the bathtub on the right lol). The second shot is Weston with his Dad Jesse and Mom Jeri again. His dad used to be a serious bodybuilder who often shared gym equipment with Arnold the Governator at the famous Gold’s Gym in LA. Jesse’s also a professional musician who plays San Diego regularly. The third shot is of Weston and his little sister Jessica. Jessica is like I mentioned about to be a Mom so we’re pretty excited to be an Aunt & Uncle!

That is still $56 for WV, and you all know what that means…. we will just have to try again soon! If you are feeling giving today and would like to donate to this wonderful cause just visit www.firstgiving.com/captured

A big thanks to those who participated! xoxo
