Kim & Dan :: The North Chapel & The Dana :: San Diego, CA

Amanda (our studio’s concierge) is actually Kim’s best friend and was the maid of honor in the wedding so it was cool to have Amanda right in the mix to see us work at a wedding through client’s eyes. Kim & Dan and everyone attending the wedding were a seriously fun bunch of people, you could just feel the love and excitement in the air as the day progressed towards the reception. Oh and Kim’s Dad, Jim, seriously rocks; he’s all about coming to one of my band’s live shows. I thought he was just being polite but he literally checked out our myspace page and show dates and has been itchin’ to check out us, NICE!

You may notice that the photos of Kim & Dan together look like they were taken in really low light. That’s cause they were and that was definitely not planned for, haha. It also didn’t help that our video light batteries both suspiciously died on us, lol. Plan B? Hmm…shoot with available light I suppose?! Well, easier said than done when it’s so dark that your camera can’t find a focus point even at 3200 ISO while shooting wide open at 1.2. At that point all I could think of was to have Marissa flip open my cell phone to let the display shed a tiny patch of light on Kim & Dan’s faces. This barely worked but was enough to get what we needed. Wheww! Sure, we could’ve used flash but the look is completely opposite of what we were going for. Also didn’t want to flash them for a focus point as it would’ve blinded them with how dark it was out. Stoked on the shots though! Woo hoo! Oh and I just bought new video lights to avoid any future cell phone illumination needs. ;)

Tam & Tom :: Our first Vietnamese Wedding! :: Los Angeles, CA

We actually carpooled up to Los Angeles with our good friends and fellow vendors John & Norma from NR3 Video Productions. I don’t think we would’ve been able to pull off the logistics of the trip without John’s iPhone GPS, Norma’s driving skills, and Marissa’s great sense of direction. I just kept quiet and drank my slurpee since my internal compass is similar to a merry-go-round having a seizure.

It was so interesting to take in all the traditions that are unique to a Vietnamese wedding. It was eye-opening to see how much it differs from American weddings. For example, Tam, the bride, had 4 different dresses/outfits for the day and Tom, the groom, had two. The ceremony takes place at the bride’s parent’s home in which the groom must present gifts to the bride’s family, accept tea, and then gain entrance into the home itself. A tea offering to each guest at the ceremony also takes place in which red envelope offerings are given to the bride and groom at the same time.

It’s also traditional to take photos at the reception entrance with every guest as they arrive and then treat them to an extensive dinner involving 10-12 courses. Of which included live fried fish, shark fin soup, and sea cucumber dishes. Thank you to Tam and Tom for including us in the meal. John and Norma offered us tons of insight the entire day as they had experience with other Vietnamese weddings so it was nice to have a heads up; thanks guys! ;)

Missing my man. Day 6.

Weston and I have known each other since I was 14. He kissed me at a party under a tree. After that I was smitten. Three years later, ‘99, we were dating and completely inseperable from then on. Last week I left to speak at DWF and when I returned Weston was leaving for a few days to NAMM. A huge music convention in LA. We saw each other for an hour or so. This is the longest we have been apart (aside from his month in London in ‘99 when he was working for a video game company) and I cannot wait to spend the day with him tomorrow.

I thought you all might get a kick outta seeing him below back in the day. How strange was it to have to “scan” in a couple of photos!

Lori & Nick :: Powerhouse :: Del Mar, CA

Lori & Nick were only contracted for a few short hours, but fortunately those hours fell on one of the most beautiful sunsets we’ve witnessed. I absolutely love the way the shots turned out, great job you two! Wow, and what a sweet couple…these two were so kind, humble and respectful. I can totally see why their friends and family adored them so much.

It was refreshing to shoot an event like this as it was intentionally more low-key and gave us an environment that was much more relaxed to photograph. Quite the opposite of the high intensity, fast-paced, rush from place to place scenario we’re used to, lol ;). And I honestly think it shows in the vibe of the photos. I mention this simply for couples out there who may benefit from a wedding day schedule that has appropriate amounts of time based on the number of events and locations being considered.

The more complex the wedding becomes, the more chances there are for things to go in an unexpected direction (hair/makeup runs late, not finding parking at multiple locations, etc.) . We often find that with the more involved weddings, the more sacrifices have to be made for the photography and the wedding in general. Those couples are also less relaxed as they are usually juggling too many things, even with an experienced coordinator in place. In short, in our experience, 1 to 2 close-proximity locations for the entire wedding is ideal and have yielded the best results for everyone involved. Just my opinion after going to a couple weddings ;). And not to worry, if you already have 3-4 locations contracted, picked out and paid for, Marissa is a master of photography timelines so we can still make it work ;)

Jen & Kyle :: Maderas Golf Club :: Rancho Bernardo, CA

This was an interesting wedding for Marissa and I to shoot because we had just photographed a wedding at Maderas Golf Club only weeks prior to Jen & Kyle’s. What I mean by interesting is that although a perfect photo plan from the prior wedding could’ve easily been used, we prefer the challenge of finding new spots and angles to shoot. After all we feel our clients deserve it so why not keep it fresh, right?!

Danielle & Kenoli :: Bates Nut Farm :: Valley Center, CA

Danielle & Kenoli chose a really unique venue which was perfect for the Holiday timeframe due to it’s warm, family feel and themed layout. The Bates Nut Farm is a huge spread of property with pumpkin fields, corn fields and old stylized buildings. Some of the touches that Danielle & Kenoli came up with that I loved most at the ceremony site were the red draperies and of course the home base plate at the altar ;). Kenoli is a talented baseball player and coach so it was more than fitting, especially after you’ve seen their engagement shots (see link below). We tried some off camera flash shots at their wedding and came out with the shot of them in the pumpkin field, which I thought was cool. It’s nice in the sense that the sky remains exposed to show how intricate the clouds were that evening. Thanks again for all the baked goods you brought by the studio Danielle, we ate every last morsel! You’re a sweetheart ;)
