Marissa and I had the amazing opportunity to shoot for one of the top Bridal Mags earlier this year (San Diego Style Weddings Magazine) and recently found out that our shots will be used for two different covers! One for Dec/Jan of this year and Aug/Sept of 2009. Several other shots taken will also be used for editorial pieces within certain issues such as the cake images below and other bridal gown shots. Some of these shots were scanned in so be forgiving on the color matching! :).
The shoot for the bridal gowns was on day 1 while day 2 consisted of all cake shots. Half the shots were done here at our Sorrento Valley studio while the outdoor shots were nearby at a dead end road location. Props to my good friend Brian MacKenzie for allowing us to use his 1965 Lincoln Continental during the shoot. This gave the cover shot below a perfect compliment since the dress was vintage inspired.
The shoot overall was a great experience for Marissa and I. We immediately knew that our biggest asset was to use everything that is unique to our brand and style of shooting to come up with our own spin on the look of the shots. Examples being that we used our own lighting, custom backdrops, and posing that is signature to our studio. Our boudoir portraiture style had a huge influence on all the shots as you’ll see some of the backdrops used for even the cake shots of all things. We didn’t really have a concrete plan for all the shots, which was intentional on our part. We knew what was available and also knew we would have more fun if we just ran with it loosely. Marissa and I are used to shooting on the fly since weddings are exactly that; so it worked out well. The outdoor shots were definitely at a tough time of the day out in direct sunlight but with the use of a single reflector (thanks Bri!) the lighting didn’t come off as harsh as it was in person.
Though stressful at times, knowing that while you’re shooting, you have up to 10 people at a time all behind you(stylists, hair/makeup artists, florists) observing, it’s encouraging to know that we performed and we’ll be able to handle that type of shooting environment in the future. We’re so thankful that Dena (SDSW Magazine Owner) even considered our studio in the first place and are extremely excited that her and the staff at SDSW were so happy with the shots.
The models were also really great; thank you Alexis & Niki. You were both a true pleasure to work with. A big shout out goes to Haydee, Ellie, Joie, Dena, Kimberlee West, Crystal, Deena C., and Brian for all their help; as we could not have pulled it off without you guys!
I also included some extra shots that we took that day that were some of our faves.
